The purpose of philosophy is to learn how to think by ourselves but what does that mean?

From ancient Greece to present day there have been influences of manipulation in society which have worked to condition collective thought and distract people from taking part as protagonists in their own lives. This talk will examine the concept of social manipulation through the vision of Plato's Myth of the Cave and by examining modern elements of spin which have come to define the 21st century.

How free are we to think for ourselves? How can we gain distance from these external influences? What is the role of philosophy in the liberation of the individual?
